Indianapolis Landlord Registration proposal….There is unrest in the forest….

This week, behavior of certain members of the Indianapolis City Council reminded me of a song that until just now, I couldn’t put my finger on it….their efforts to pass such a noble law nailed it. The band, Rush, penned this banner musical demonstration into the history books. As we battle the evil collectivism that is rooting itself in our culture instead of actually solving problems with logic, data, and common sense, it is imperative to understand the forces at play here. Tuesday at 5:30 PM….Will YOU stand up?

  Tomorrow evening, citizens of Indianapolis will stand up and exercise their Right of Freedom of Speech. Will you stand and be counted? The Rules and Public Policy Committee of the Indianapolis City-County Council will hold a hearing Tuesday August 5th at 5:30 p.m. in Room 260 of the City-County Building on two proposals that will significantly impact rental property in Marion County. Proposal 215 would amend the Human Relations ordinance to say an applicant cannot be screened on source of income. Among other issues, this would mandate landlord participation in the Section 8 federal program. Proposal 195 would require all landlords to register their contact information along with a list of all properties, pay a $5 annual fee, and verify they do not have unpaid taxes or un-remediated code violations. You get what you pay for….

If you’ve ever had to do verbal battle with a past tenant on damage, you’ll appreciate this story…. Polaris Property Management often gets assigned to take over properties from other management companies and the lack of information provided to us by the prior company or even the owner themselves leaves much to be desired, especially when it comes to the property condition.  It’s no wonder Landlords have a negative attitude when dealing with tenants as it’s tough for even the best-intentioned person to clearly remember if a carpet stain was in this room, or that room…. At BEST, we get iphone pictures of vacant rooms with the photo taken standing in the doorway. At WORST, we get nothing. Don’t you DARE treat income sources differently….

If you thought the ignorance couldn’t get any, well, more stupid, drop your eyes down to the next lines: The Indianapolis City-County Council has a new proposal to tie into the other proposed Landlord Registration.
